Dr. Lishan Aklog, M.D. of St. Joseph’s Medical Center explains the causes of mitral valve disease, a potentially fatal condition that affects the heart.
Sometimes the condition can occur because of wear and tear on the heart. This is called degenerative valve disease, where the valve doesn’t function the way it used to. This is the most common cause.
The condition can also occur because of an infection that weakens the heart. Those who have experienced a heart attack in the past are also susceptible to this disease.
Fortunately, there are treatments and surgery available that can repair this condition.
